The Little Known Story of How Kuomintang Generals Participated in Korea
During the Korean Conflict (1950–1953), a significant portion of the Chinese forces which participated in the war against the Americans were former Chinese Nationalist (KMT) soldiers, led by former-Nationalist officers. Namely — the People’s Volunteer Army’s (PVA) 50th Army and the 23rd Corps of the PVA 36th Army were almost completely made up of former KMT troops which had defected to the Communists during the Second Phase of the Chinese Civil War (1945-1949).
The PVA 50th Army which fought tenaciously against the Americans all throughout the Korean Conflict, had previously been the Kuomintang “60th Army”. Following the defeat of the “60th Army” during the Chinese Civil War, the “60th Army” defected to the Communists and was renamed the 50th Army.
The Commander of the 50th Army was Zeng Zesheng(曾泽生), an officer who began his career in the Kuomintang and was a graduate of the third class of the Whampoa Military Academy. During the Chinese Civil War, Zeng found his unit completely trapped by the Communist Forces and decided to change allegiances.
